Sharon 1999-2024

Two images taken 25 years apart. A new portfolio I realized I can make with people I have been photographing over many years.

Reexamining old files-we've come a long way

I was recently forced to clean out a metal locker that stored all my third level off site back up's. These are mostly DVD's, CD's and 3.5 drives in storage cases that I keep at my studio. I have am one issue out there and the mice got into the locker and made a mess, lets leave it at that. In cleaning out the locker I found really old back up's and some CD's from 2001. I decided to spin up some of the drives to see if they are still readable and check the CD's as well. This image was taken in 2001 with a Kodak 14N, a 13 MP camera that at the time sold for $5,000. I reopened the files with PS 26.1 and did a lot of work on them, mostly noise reduction, but they are a far cry from what we're using now.

Collecting vintage digital cameras

I've been reading a lot lately about "vintage digital cameras" & how they are a thing with the young photo set, sorry I just don't get it. For years those of us who were too often on the bleeding tech edge struggled with shitty AF, shutter lag and noise. I love some of my vintage film cameras, like my Nikon S4 and my Deardorff 5x7 but they still takes really solid images. My first real digital camera, a Nikon P5000 (2007) was such a terrible camera to use, total frustration. I can't image going back to using one of those, even now looking at the files from my Nikon D100, the noise level was pretty high even at ISO 200.

You kids keep on it, I'll stick with my Z8

Studio shoot with Kendra

I have traditional worked with Kendra early in the summer/spring and this year was no exception. We first photographed together in 2009, so we have a good studio rapport. I'm still struggling with the white backdrop however.

First all studio shoot of 2024

The studio is finally all on line and warm enough to do a full studio shoot. Traditionally I do this with my "senior muse" who I've been working with since 1984.

Some of the lighting in a couple of the 5 sets still need some work, I'm going to totally redesign the white set before the next shoot for sure.

Too Provocative ?

I was recently invited to be part of an exhibition of work from photo alumni at the University of Rhode Island, Three to four framed works to be hung in Green Hall, the admin and presidents suites, great. I thought perhaps some older work that conflates science and art, my Body, Soul and Science portfolio. I should had paid closer attention to the phrase " send work that is not too provocative" which to turns out for anything that involves the nude figure.

So now it's work from the R.I. coastal landscape series, I'm sure the president will love them.

2004 revisited

I guess part of my getting older is to document the passage of time and how we adapt to it. These photographs are from a shoot I did in 2004 and the other from 2024-3 just last week.

First photo nude photo shoot of 2024

The studio is still too cold to work in, so I did a location shoot at my friend Russell's house this week.

The weather was perfect and Aimee was game so I took advance of the chance to do some partially clothed portrait work of her along the Mississippi River at the Bonett Carre spillway.

Scanning 4x5 negatives with the Epson V850

I have to say, with the new Epson glass film holders, they scan pretty sharp, and the software is way easier to use.

Scanning negatives on the IMACON

I have not done much scanning on the WU IMACON flex tight scanner in a while. I have an Epson V850 and have been using that. I was interested in comparing the two scanners and although the IMACON makes crazy sharp scans there were for me, lots of issues with excessively contrasty scans.
